How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Your Home

When choosing the perfect rug for your home, many people think that it’s about selecting the right colour or pattern for your home interior, however the size of your rug can completely change the feel and functionality of a room.

Whether you’re furnishing a dining room, living room, or bedroom, the right rug size helps frame your furniture, create balance, and make your space feel comfortable and inviting.

It may sound odd, but start by measuring your furniture. Within a dining room, here are some simple steps to take :

• Dining table: Measure the length and width of the table.
• Include chairs: Consider the space chairs take when pulled out; this will prevent snagging and keeps the area comfortable.

Useful Tip: Allow at least 60–76 cm around all sides of the table for chair clearance.

Step 2: Add Clearance

Here comes the mathematical part – use this formula to calculate the rug size:

Rug size = Table size + 2 × Chair pull-out distance

For example:

• If the table dimensions are 75 cm × 120 cm
• The clearance is 65 cm all around
• The recommended rug size: 195 cm × 240 cm

This ensures that even when chairs are pulled out, they remain on the rug, protecting both the floor and the rug edges.

Step 3: Match the Rug Shape to Your Table

This may sound like a very basic thing to do, but we would suggest matching the shape of your rug with the shape of your furniture, for example

• Rectangular table → Rectangular rug
• Round table → Round rug
• Square table → Square or slightly larger rectangular rug

Matching shapes helps maintain visual harmony in your room and keeps the layout feeling intentional.

Step 4: Consider the Room Size

Balance and practicality come hand in hand. Here, it’s important to think about the following:

• Leave at least 45–60 cm of floor space around the rug edges for balance.
• Avoid oversized rugs that overpower the room or make cleaning difficult.

Step 5: Living Room & Other Spaces

For living areas, the same principles apply:

• Anchor all major furniture on the rug, either fully or at least the front legs.
• Ensure the rug complements the room layout, creating a cohesive and inviting space.

Once you’ve done all of this and found the perfect rug that meets the look and feel of your room, you can be confident that a rug is going to help in many ways, including protecting the floor and reducing noise.

It’s also important to consider the material that the rug is made from. Some materials, like Sisal, are best suited to light and moderate footfall like bedrooms, whilst carpets made from nylon will perform much better in high traffic commercial environments.
